The Real Cost of Chasing Status
Let's have an honest conversation about money, status, and what really matters.
It's that time of year where your bank accounts are full of cash and you're trying to decide what you're going to buy yourself or where you're going to go on vacation.
This is the first year my bank account isn't getting an AEP check, and what I've learned over the past 7 years of getting that check is that no matter what you're going to do with that money, it's not going to help you outrun your past.
Here's the truth bomb you need to hear:
That new watch, that new handbag, that new car, or whatever everyone's posting on those Facebook groups aren't going to do shit for you.
Trust me, I've been in your shoes.
I thought I needed that Rolex, that Range Rover and I've had it all before.
And frankly, I had a moment today where I'm thinking about selling my Rolex.
Why?
Because the cost of chasing status doesn't do anything for you other than fill a void for hours, if not minutes or seconds.
I spent a lot of time in 2024 trying to figure the fuck out what makes Mike Mathweg tick.
And guess what didn't come up in this deep work?
The Rolex I have, the lake house, the boat, the house, the cars.
None of it.
Not a single material possession made the list.
What came up instead was something far more valuable:
I have a gift that no one else has, making a complex process very simple for others to recreate.
I have the gift of helping other insurance agents structure and scale their business with no fucking end game of trying to recruit them.
Because frankly, I don't give a fuck who your upline is.
I care about YOU and helping YOU achieve your goals and dreams.
Let me tell you something that took me years to learn:
The status symbols don't fill the void
The material possessions don't silence the doubts
The expensive toys don't create lasting happiness
What does?
Making a real impact in people's lives.
I achieved my lifelong dream in 2022 when I sold my insurance agency, and now I'm on a mission of empowering other agents around the country to do that damn same thing.
But here's what I wish someone had told me earlier: Your worth isn't measured by the watch on your wrist or the car in your driveway.
It's measured by:
The lives you impact
The freedom you create
The memories you make with your family
The legacy you build
Instead of dropping that AEP check on another status symbol, consider investing in:
Your personal growth - mentor π
Your business systems
Your family's experiences
Your long-term freedom
I'm not saying don't enjoy your success.
Hell, you've earned it.
But before you click 'buy' on that next luxury purchase, ask yourself this question.
Will this move me closer to true freedom, or am I just trying to prove something to someone who doesn't matter?
Personally, Iβve been trying to impress people I really donβt care about.
Success isn't about having the most expensive toys in the room.
It's about having the freedom to live life on your own terms.
It's about:
Being present with your family without checking your phone every 5 minutes
Making decisions based on what you want, not what others expect
Building something that serves your life, not consuming it
Creating a legacy that's bigger than material possessions
So here's my challenge to you:
Before you spend that AEP check, take a moment to think about what really matters to you.
What would move the needle in your life?
What would create lasting impact, not just temporary satisfaction?
Because at the end of the day, no one lies on their death bed wishing they'd bought more stuff.
They wish they'd spent more time with family, made more memories, and created more impact.
To your freedom and impact,
Mike
